Washington Stealth stars Paul Rabil and Eric
Martin have been selected to the final 23-man roster of the 2010 United States
Men’s National Lacrosse Team. The
team will travel to Manchester, England for the 2010 Federation of
International Lacrosse (FIL) World Field Lacrosse Championships from July
14-24, 2010.
The training team roster of 41 was narrowed down to the Federation of
International Lacrosse (FIL)-mandated size of 23 players after three fall
exhibition weekends in West Point, N.Y., Annapolis, Md. and Stony Brook, N.Y.
Since the first recognized international championship in 1967, the U.S. has won
eight gold medals, most recently in 2002.
Rabil was the second overall selection in the 2008 National Lacrosse League
(NLL) Entry Draft and finished his All-Rookie Team campaign with 34 points
(16g, 18a) in 16 games for the Stealth this season. He is the reigning
Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year in Major League Lacrosse
(MLL), where he plays for the Boston Cannons. He is also a two-time All-Star. During his collegiate career at Johns Hopkins University, he
was a four-time All-American, three times nominated to the first team. He
was the NCAA Division I Midfielder of the Year his junior season and was twice
a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy. He is a two-time National Champion
and is the JHU leader for goals and points as a midfielder.
Martin finished his fifth NLL season with 18 points (6g, 12a) and a team-high
100 loose balls in 2009. In 2008, he was named to the NLL West Division
All-Star team. In his five-year NLL career, he has accumulated 13 goals,
46 assists and 464 loose balls, all with the Stealth. In his first season with
the Denver Outlaws of the MLL, Martin led the Outlaws to the 2009 MLL
Championship game. Martin played the previous three seasons with the San
Francisco Dragons, where he was a two-time MLL All-Pro. He played
his college ball at Salisbury State, where he won two NCAA Division III
Championships. He was twice named to the All-American first team and was
recognized as the Division III National Player of the Year as a senior.
He was the Division III Defenseman of the Year his junior and senior seasons.
“Our organization is proud
of Paul and Eric, both players have the character to make good decisions under
pressure and they stand out in those situations,” said Stealth President and
General Manager Johnny Mouradian, who is also the General Manager of Team
Canada. “In 1974 the United States, England, Australian and Canada teams were
competing, now there are 24 FIL national teams and nine associate FIL members in
the early stages of development. The
games are an experience Paul and Eric will cherish.”
