The National Lacrosse League announced today that Rhys Duch has been named the Rookie of the Week for his performance in the Stealth’s home-and-home series against Portland last weekend. His twelve points on the weekend give him 70 this year; he needs just twelve more to tie the League’s rookie scoring record.
On March 28 at the HP Pavilion, Duch finished with five goals, three assists and ten loose balls in a 14-12 loss to the Lumberjax. The Stealth got their revenge the next night and Duch was instrumental in that, as he was credited with four assists and eight loose balls.
This season, Duch is second on the team in points (70) assists (46) and loose balls (84). He is third in goals (24). His point total is good for fifth in the NLL. He averages 5.4 points per game and with three game’s left, is on pace to finish the season with 86 points. Gavin Prout holds the record for most points by a rookie with 82 in 2002 with the now defunct New York Saints franchise.
“I’ve been told that I’m on pace to break the rookie scoring record, but to be honest I don’t even want to know what the record is until the end of the year,” said Duch to NLL Insider earlier this week. “I need to focus on winning rather than shooting for a number, although it is very exciting.”
Duch and the Stealth currently sit at 5-8 on the season, just a half game out of the fourth and final West Division playoff spot. They square off against the team they’re chasing, the Minnesota Swarm, on April 3 at 7:00pm. It’s Fan Appreciation Night at the HP Pavilion with the first 2,500 fans receiving a special edition Stealth t-shirt. There is also a “Launch-A-Ball” Sticks-2-Schools promotion taking place following the game. There will be chances to win great prizes such as a Nintendo Wii, iPod Touch, and much more.
