(Vancouver, BC – Friday, November 8, 2013) – The Vancouver Stealth announced that they have re-signed Chris O’Dougherty to a one year contract, pending league approval. O’Dougherty is entering his 5th year with the Stealth after originally being drafted 58th overall in the 2009 NLL Entry Draft.
In 4 seasons with the Stealth O’Dougherty has worked himself into a key role on the defensive end and continues to bring more to the team each year. O’Dougherty only appeared in 2 regular season games during his rookie season in 2010, but he put in a lot of work that off season and it really showed at training camp the following year. In just his second year in the NLL O’Dougherty secured himself in the lineup and played in 14 of 16 games during the 2011 season adding 2 points (1g, 1a) and 26 loose balls.
O’Dougherty has made strides throughout his lacrosse career and he couldn’t be happier about returning to the Stealth for a chance to do more this season,
“They’ve helped me grow as a person and as a player, especially coming all the way from New Jersey and moving out west and now making the west coast my home,” said O’Dougherty.
“I want to continue to make it my home with the Stealth,”
O’Dougherty came to the NLL with no box lacrosse experience but he brought an impressive field lacrosse resume that caught the coachs’ attention. He played all four seasons of his collegiate career at Rutgers University where he was named a three-time All-ECAC. In the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft he was selected 31st overall and went on to play 3 seasons with the Denver Outlaws of the Major League Lacrosse.
“Chris has quickly developed into one of our core defenders and brings smarts, energy and grit every time he steps on the floor,” said President and General Manager Doug Locker
“He is passionate about the team and has dedicated himself to be the best possible player he can be.”
When O’Dougherty was selected to play for the Stealth in 2010 he moved from New Jersey to Seattle where he not only earned his spot with the Stealth but also became very active as a coach. O’Dougherty served as an Assistant Coach at Bellevue HS (Bellevue, WA) for three season where he was selected as Assistant Coach of the Year (2012) and helped guide the Wolverines to the Washington Lacrosse Boy’s State Championship in 2010 and 2012. This past season he served as the Head Lacrosse Coach at Eastlake HS (Sammamish, WA) where he earned Coach of the Year honours in 2013 and is looking forward to a solid 2014 season.
O’Dougherty continues to broaden his knowledge of the game and his background in coaching has played a huge part in his growth as a player. He’s also spent the last 3 summers with the Nanaimo Timbermen of the Western Lacrosse Association which has allowed him to develop his box game even more. With his experience in the WLA O’Dougherty is also very familiar with the Langley Events Centre which is the new home to the Vancouver Stealth. It should make for an easier transition and it’s something O’Dougherty is looking forward to,
“I’m pretty excited to be up in Langley and I’m looking forward to the coming season,” said O’Dougherty.
O’Dougherty and the Stealth will begin the 2014 season in Colorado on January 4th followed by their home opener at the Langley Events Centre on January 11th against the Minnesota Swarm.
