The San Jose Stealth completed its first training camp of the 2009 season this past Saturday and Sunday at Silver Creek in San Jose. Twenty seven players participated in three sessions of teaching, drills and scrimmages led by new head coach Jeff Dowling and his coaching staff, in what provided the first look at draft picks Rhys Duch and Alex Turner along with several promising free agents. “We felt we made quite a bit of progress as a team this weekend. Overall I was impressed with the players as a whole and was happy with their work ethic.” Commented head coach Jeff Dowling. “We have some difficult decisions to make in the coming weeks” he continued. Dowling was very impressed with the play of rookies Rhys Duch and Alex Turner on the offensive side of the ball and felt free agents Will Dalton (Maryland), Kyle Hartzell (Salisbury), Joe Kostolansky (Hofstra), Jason Lutz (Ohio State) and Brett Manney (Delaware) turned in solid performances on the defensive end. “I was extremely impressed with the size and skill level of Alex Turner. He really meshed well with Colin Doyle Cam Sedgwick, Frank Resetarits, Tom Johnson and Jeff Zywicki and Rhys also showed that he is ready to step in and play a big role this season.” Said Dowling. Will Dalton was everyting that Doug Locker (Assistant General Manager) and Dave Cottle (Maryland Head Coach) said he would be. He’s very quick and agile for a big man and picked up a lot of the nuances of the indoor game quickly. He played well at both ends of the floor and did a really nice job on faceoffs.” Continued Dowling. The camp also saw the return of veterans Colin Doyle, Jeff Zywicki, Curtis Hodgson, Cam Sedgwick and Kyle Sorensen. “The veterans came into camp in good shape and did a great job helping the rookies understand the game” according to Dowling. The Stealth will be taking the US Thanksgiving weekend off before returning for their second training camp at Silver Creek in San Jose on Saturday December 6th from 7am – 9am and again from 8pm to 10pm. On Sunday December 7th they practice from 7am to 9am. All training camp sessions are open to the public.
