Vancouver, BC (Monday, September 18, 2017) – The Vancouver Stealth’s NLL Draft Day started earlier than most teams Monday afternoon when they traded forward Jordan Durston in exchange for Anthony Malcom and the 12th overall pick.
The Stealth used that pick to draft Ryan Fournier, who is a 5’8”, 190lbs, right-handed transition player who put up great numbers in Junior B including 119 goals, 87 assists and 206 points in 48 games.
“I was really surprised, but to hear my name was unbelievable, I could not be happier,” said Fournier. “I like to think I do it all, I play offence, I play defence, I won a Minto Cup playing transition and I love to take faceoffs, I can play wherever I am needed to help the Stealth.”
In the third round, the Stealth took Sam Degroot 29th overall. In 2017, he was the Captain of the Port Coquitlam Saints and won the Al Boles Memorial Trophy as the BCJALL’s Most Inspirational Player. In 37 games with the Saints, he scored 39 goals, 48 assists and 86 points.
Heading into the fourth round, Vancouver opted for Jeff Wittig from St. Catharines with the 39th overall pick. The offensive leftie played four years with the St. Catharines Athletics scoring 81 goals, 102 assists 183 points in 73 games.
The Stealth decided to set their sights in between the wickets heading into the fifth round. With the 48th overall pick, Vancouver took Eric Kratz. In 2017. he was named the Monty Leahy Award winner as the Top Goalie in the BCJALL. The Salmonbellies’ goaltender went 12-4 on the season, had a GAA of 6.15, a .845 save percentage and had one shutout in the 2017 season.
In the final round, Vancouver drafted Andrew Garant in the sixth round 56th overall. The Windsor, Ontario-native played the majority of his junior career with the Windsor Clippers in the OLA’s Junior B division. Garant had a staggering 144 goals, 293 assists and 437 points in 99 regular season games.
“I think today’s big story was picking up Malcom and then drafting Fournier at 12,” said Head Coach and Assistant General Manager Jamie Batley. “We identified another guy on the backend and we got two lefties and a goalie, for the organization, it was a good day.”
The Stealth will announce their training camp and preseason schedule in the upcoming weeks. Early bird season ticket memberships are available until September 22, 2017 and can be purchased on our website or by calling 604.882.8800.
