Vancouver, BC (Saturday, February 21, 2015) – The Vancouver Stealth (3-4) ran into a hot goaltender as Frankie Scigliano stopped 36 shots as the Stealth lost their first matchup to the Calgary Roughnecks (1-6) this year, falling 16-13 in a tightly contested battle at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Rhys Duch led the way with 8 points (4g, 4a) and Corey Small scored 7 points (4g, 3a) as the Stealth were unable to complete another come-from-behind win.
“They wanted it more than us tonight,” said Assistant Coach Kaleb Toth. “We looked too relaxed out there and our guys played like a 6-0 team instead of a 3-3 team and look what happened.”
Along with Scigliano, Curtis Dickson scored a season-high 7 goals to go along with his 2 assists, while Shawn Evans scored 7 points (3g, 4a) and Dane Dobbie chipped in with 6 points (2g, 4a) as Calgary won its first game of the season.
Vancouver opened the scoring as Duch scored 2:59 into the opening frame, followed by a highlight reel goal by Johnny Powless to make it 2-0. Powless found a loose ball, spun around and fired home a behind-the-back shot past Scigliano while being careful not to step in the crease.
The Roughnecks cut the lead to 2-1 when Daryl Veltman snuck on past Tyler Richards. Calgary used a strong second quarter to take the lead, outscoring the Stealth 6-4 in the frame. Vancouver did manage goals from Tyler Hass and a Corey Small but trailed 7-6 at the half. The teams exchanged a pair of goals each in the third quarter including another spectacular goal from Small, who dove across the crease to finish off a great individual effort to cut the Roughneck lead to 9-8. The turning point came after Small’s goal but not in their favour. Small was called for a goaltender interference penalty, leading to a 5 minute Calgary power play where Dickson scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 11-8 as the Roughnecks held on for the victory.
Despite allowing 15 goals, Tyler Richards had another solid game making 41 saves but the team was unable to stop the consistent attack of the Roughnecks who finished 5-for-7 on the man advantage.
The Stealth return home for a date with the Minnesota Swarm on Saturday, February 28 as the Swarm make their lone visit to the Langley Events Centre. Game time is 7:00PM.
