January 30, 2016- Calgary, AB- The Vancouver Stealth lost to the Calgary Roughnecks 15-13 on Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome. It was the first of four meetings on the season between the two west rivals. Coming into the evening both squads had identical 1-2 records after three games into the season. Eric Penney started in goal for the Stealth, while Frankie Scigliano played for the Roughnecks.
The home team got on the board first with an unassisted goal from Jon Harnett at the 3:21 mark. Jeff Shattler went on to make it a 2-0 game at 7:29 of the opening quarter, but Logan Schuss was able to put the Stealth on the score sheet at 7:57 with a perfectly placed bounce shot past Scigliano. Garrett Billings and Joel McCready earned the assists on Schuss’ third of the year. After the face-off, Curtis Dickson scored his first of the game to give Calgary their two-goal lead back. Dickson scored another just past the 10-minute mark to make it a 4-1 lead for the home team, but 21 seconds later, Rhys Duch fired a bullet past the goaltender for his fifth goal of the year to cut the deficit to two goals. Billings and Schuss had the helpers on the tally. The two goal game did not last long though, as Roughnecks leading scorer Dane Dobbie notched his first of the game at 11:37. Duch closed the quarter scoring his second with a shot over the left shoulder of Scigliano to make it a two score game after 15 minutes. Schuss had the only assist on the play.
In the second quarter, Schuss began the scoring with a highlight reel goal and second of the night. The Ladner native was able to unload a one-handed shot in transition that fooled Scigliano over the right arm. It was a short-handed goal with Duch and Hawksbee getting the assists. On the ensuing face-off, Dickson got the goal right back with his hat-trick goal to make it 6-4. The Stealth were then able to take over the game scoring the next three goals from Schuss and Billings twice. Corey Small had assists on both goals and earned his 300th career NLL point. At half-time, Vancouver held a 7-6 advantage and out shot Calgary 28-22.
The ‘Riggers came out hard in the second half and scored three straight goals from Dobbie, Dickson, and Shattler to take a 9-7 lead. However, Small and Billings scored back to back within a minute of each other to knot the game 9-9. less than four minutes after, Dobbie and Tyson Bell restored the two goal advantage only to have Joel McCready get two goals in a span of 27 seconds and make it an 11-11 score going into the fourth quarter.
In the final 15 minutes, Wesley Berg, Dickson, and Shattler scored three consecutive goals to get the Roughnecks ahead by 3 with less than seven minutes to play. After Duch scored his hat-trick goal at 9:30 on the power play, Shattler put the game away at 12:57 after the Stealth could not capitalize on a two- man advantage. Logan Schuss scored the teams 13th and final goal of the game with the extra attacker on the floor at 13:59, but was not enough to complete the comeback.
Despite it being a very entertaining game, the Stealth lost their second game in a row and fall to 1-3 on the season. Logan Schuss had his best game of the 2016 campaing recording 5 goals and 4 assists for 9 points. His season total coming into the match-up was 9 points in total. Duch also had a strong game with 8 points, while Billings finished with 7.
