Stealth Struggles Continue in Third Straight Loss

The Colorado Mammoth scored their first goal just over five minutes into the game and never looked back as they went on to a 14-11 win over the San Jose Stealth at the HP Pavilion March 14.  It is the third straight loss for the Stealth, who fall to 3-7 on the year.

After giving up the first two goals of the game, Stealth rookie standout Rhys Duch scored midway through the opening quarter to jumpstart the Stealth offense.  Cam Sedgwick scored twenty seconds later to tie the score, but a three-goal run by Colorado to close out the quarter gave the Mammoth a 5-2 lead after one.

The teams traded goals to start the second quarter, then Sedgwick got the Stealth within two goals with 2:41 left in the first half.  Once again the Mammoth stymied any chance of a Stealth run, this time with a pair of goals in the half’s final minute to take a 9-5 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Stealth tried to rally again.  Jeff Zywicki and Peter Veltman scored to make the score 9-7.  But Colorado answered with a pair of goals yet again, extending their lead to four.  Colin Doyle Rounded out the third quarter scoring with 1:46 left to make it 11-8 in favor of the Mammoth.

The Stealth were unable to mount a comeback in the fourth, as every Stealth goal was matched by their West Division rival.  Tom Johnson’s tally with one second left rounded out the scoring to make it 14-11 at the final whistle.

Doyle led the Stealth offense with three goals and added three assists.  Zywicki finished with a team-high seven points on two goals and five assists.  Duch added two goals and four assists while Sedgwick tallied two and one.  Matt Roik made 26 saves and was credited with the loss.

The game’s MVP honors went to Colorado’s Brian Langtry, who finished with four goals and five assists.  Mammoth goaltender Andrew Leyshon made 42 saves in the win.

The Stealth are back in action next week, when they take on the Edmonton Rush at the HP Pavilion.  The March 21st game has been dubbed “Irish Heritage Night” with the first 2,500 fans receiving an Irish Night hat.  Face-off is scheduled for 7:30pm with the doors opening at 6:30pm.  Tickets are available by calling 877-MY-SJ-TIX or at
