Last Spring, the Sticks-2-Schools program was introduced to Washington and visited schools in the Puget Sound region, introducing students to the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. With over 80 schools on the waiting list for this great program, Sticks-2-Schools is teaming up with the Washington Stealth for a fundraiser at Tech City Bowl in Kirkland, Wash., on October 16 to introduce more children to lacrosse as a way to get active and stay fit.
Sticks-2-Schools is a nonprofit, public benefit corporation, organized under the 501(c)3 section of the tax code, that helps fight childhood obesity by motivating youth to increase their level of physical activity. The program donates lacrosse equipment, curriculum guides and instruction from Stealth players at no cost to the schools.
In 2008, the Washington Department of Health estimated that 25% of students in grades six through twelve were overweight or obese. Several factors contribute to the increasing rates of overweight among children, such as fewer opportunities for physical activity, fewer meals eaten at home, media and marketing that target children with food advertisements, increased portion sizes, and increased amount of time in sedentary activities, including watching television and using computers. Through lacrosse, Sticks-2-Schools provides children with a new and fun way to stay active.
The Tech City Bowl fundraiser will help to provide more students in Washington the opportunity to learn about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle through lacrosse. Those in attendance will be treated to an afternoon of bowling, arcade games and snacks with numerous players from the Washington Stealth, as well as the Bombshells dance team and the Stealth mascot, Bomber the Fox. The event will be held from 1pm-3pm on Sunday, October 16.
Tickets for the event are just $25 for adults and $15 for children under 13 years old. There will also be an auction including great prizes and Stealth memorabilia. All of the money raised during the event will go towards equipment, curriculum guides and instruction for local schools on the Sticks-2-Schools waiting list. Tech City Bowl is located at 13033 NE 70th Place, Kirkland, WA 98033.
