Calgary, Alberta – For the second time against the Calgary Roughnecks this season, the San Jose Stealth failed to comeback from a five goal deficit. The Roughnecks never trailed in the game, ultimately handing the Stealth their third loss of the season by a score of 16-13.
Calgary (4-0) jumped out to a quick three-goal lead less than two minutes into the first quarter. Tom Johnson scored the first of his three goals on the night to stop the early run, but the Roughnecks scored four of the next five goals to take a 7-2 lead late in the opening frame. In the first meeting between these teams on January 9 at the HP Pavilion, Calgary used a five-goal lead in the third quarter to propel them to a 12-10 win.
The Stealth cut the lead to three before the end of the first on goals from Colin Doyle and Jeff Zywicki. The Roughnecks built the lead back to four at the halftime break as Josh Sanderson netted his second of the night with four minutes left in the second quarter to make it 10-6.
The third belonged to the Stealth, who battled back with three straight to start the second half. Rookie standout Rhys Duch scored twice in the quarter to bring the Stealth within one entering the final stanza.
That was as close as the Stealth would get, however, as two goals from the Roughnecks to start the fourth gave them a three-goal advantage at 13-10. Alex Turner scored his only goal of the game to cut the deficit to two goals with seven minutes left in regulation. Johnson scored twice in the fourth to keep the Stealth close, but a too many men penalty against the Stealth with 30 seconds left and the score at 15-13 gave the Roughnecks a penalty shot and a chance to ice the game. Dane Dobbie took advantage of the penalty shot and put the game out of reach as the Roughnecks escaped with the 16-13 victory.
Colin Doyle led the Stealth with eight points on a goal and seven assists. Rhys Duch scored three goals and assisted on three more for six points. Tom Johnson (3g, 1a) and Jeff Zywicki (2g, 2a) each finished with four points. Tyler Richards came off the bench and played three quarters in goal, making 32 saves on 41 Roughneck shots.
The Stealth returns home on January 31 to take on the Edmonton Rush at the HP Pavilion. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:30pm (PST). Tickets are available by calling 877 MY-SJ-TIX or at ticketmaster.com.
