The San Jose Stealth never trailed on their way to a 16-6 win over the Edmonton Rush at the HP Pavilion on January 31. Fourteen players registered a point and Matt Roik remained solid in goal to propel the Stealth to their second win of the season. The Stealth got out to an early lead, scoring the only three goals of the first quarter and the first five goals of the game. Tom Johnson tallied his first of the night on assists from Colin Doyle and Paul Rabil just 28 seconds into the game. Edmonton bounced back with three straight of their own, to close out the first half and cut the Stealth lead to 5-3 at the break. To open the third, Cam Sedgwick scored on the power play two minutes in, and Eric Martin put in the eventual game-winner less than two minutes later to begin a half dominated by San Jose. Six Stealth goals in the fourth quarter capped the 16-6 victory. Sedgwick led all scorers with six points (4g, 2a) on his way to game MVP honors. Martin finished with a goal and an assist while collecting 15 loose balls. Martin’s two scraps in the second half with Edmonton’s Chris McElroy and Jamie Floris epitomized the Stealth’s intensity throughout the game. Returning from a one-game suspension, Matt Roik showed why he is among the NLL’s elite, with a 35-save performance between the pipes. He closed the door on any attempt at a comeback with 13 saves in the fourth alone. In a night where an entire team stepped up, Stealth Assistant Captain Curtis Hodgson scored twice and added two assists along with eight loose balls. Colin Doyle (1g, 3a) and Tom Johnson (2g, 2a) tallied four points and Paul Rabil finished with the first two-goal performance of his career and three points total. Fellow rookie Will Dalton was quick at the draw once again, winning 14-of-26 of the face-offs in the game. The Stealth travel to Portland on February 7 to take on the Lumberjax at the Rose Garden Arena. The West Division game begins at 7:30pm and can be seen on the NLL Network on NLL.com. The Stealth comes back to the HP Pavilion on February 21 against the Colorado Mammoth. That game is Major League Eating Night featuring Bay Area’s native son Joey Chestnut. Tickets are available at 877-MY-SJ-TIX or at Ticketmaster.com.
