Stealth Pick Up Huge Win Over Colorado

By Washington Stealth
In front of the seventh largest crowd in San Jose Stealth history, the Stealth settled down after a shaky first quarter to beat the Colorado Mammoth 14-9 at the HP Pavilion on February 21. Colin Doyle earned game MVP honors with a nine-point performance to improve their record to 3-4 on the season and move into fourth place in the West Division standings. After the Mammoth scored the first goal on a power play less than two minutes into the game, Doyle and Tom Johnson scored back-to-back goals to put the Stealth up 2-1. But from there the Stealth gave up two more extra-man goals and three total to take a 4-2 lead after the opening frame. Colorado scored first in the second period to extend their lead to three goals, but a ferocious six-goal run put the Stealth up 8-5 at the halftime break. Halftime was an event in itself, as local legend and world eating champion Joey “Jaws” Chestnut was poised to set a world record for macaroni and cheese consumption. He wowed the crowd in his first performance in San Jose with an incredible ten-and-one-half pounds eating clinic in the seven minutes allotted. When it came time to return to the lacrosse action, Colorado made their run at a comeback, scoring a pair of goals to cut the Stealth lead to one. San Jose stymied the Mammoth rally however, scoring six of the next seven goals into the fourth quarter. Rookie Rhys Duch scored three times during the run and Jeff Zywicki added a pair of goals. Matt Roik was solid between the pipes, making 16 of his 45 saves in the fourth quarter alone. Colorado added a meaningless goal with less than two minutes remaining to make the final score 14-9. Doyle finished with two goals and seven assists to lead the offense. Duch recorded a hat trick and four assists. Zywicki also finished with a hat trick and two helpers, while Cam Sedgwick scored two goals and assisted on three more. The Stealth are in action again on February 28, when they travel cross-country to take on the expansion Boston Blazers. The following night, they take on the New York Titans at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.
