Stealth Make Roster Changes at NLL Trade Deadline

03/17/2009, 6:24pm PDT
By Washington Stealth
The National Lacrosse League Trade Deadline approached today, and the San Jose Stealth were very active with roster moves as they prepare for the final six games on their schedule.  Former Stealth Captain Shaydon Santos, Andrew Biers and Steve Holmes were all added to the active roster March 17.

Santos retired before the start of the 2009 season after eleven years of service in the NLL.  He was a member of the Albany Attack from 2001-2003 then moved with the franchise to San Jose where he served as the team’s captain in 2007.  He was also a member of the Stealth coaching staff in 2005.

In his eleven NLL seasons, the defenseman accumulated 94 points (36g, 58a) and 499 loose balls.  He also won 57% of the 466 face-offs he took in his career.  During his short stint as a retiree, Santos started the Box Lacrosse Academy at the Silver Creek Sports Complex in San Jose.

Defenseman Andrew Biers was acquired by the Stealth in a trade with the Edmonton Rush.  The Stealth sent a first round pick in the 2009 NLL Entry Draft to the Rush in exchange for Biers.  The first round pick was acquired from the Chicago Shamrox last offseason and will be the 12th pick in 2009.  Biers played for the Stealth in 2004.  He also spent time with the Calgary Roughnecks and the Minnesota Swarm in his NLL career.  In 2007, he played a career-high 15 games for the Swarm and finished with four goals and fourteen assists.  He also grabbed 67 loose balls.  Following an injury that ended his 2008 season, Biers played in just two games for the Rush in 2009.

The Stealth also activated transition player Steve Holmes from the Physically Unable to Perform List.  Holmes is in his third NLL season, all of which have been with the Stealth.  In 31 games, he has 18 points (6g, 12a) and 133 loose balls.  At the University of Virginia, Holmes established himself as one of the nation’s top defenders and was selected to the honorable mention All-American team in 2005.

“We took a big step forward today by signing Shaydon (Santos), activating Steve (Holmes) and trading for Andrew (Biers),” said Stealth Vice President and Assistant General Manager Doug Locker.  “All three of these guys will make us better on and off the floor.  Shaydon is a proven leader and an outstanding player with extensive NLL experience and we are very excited about him returning to our organization.  Andrew is another proven NLL performer who is already familiar with both our organization and coaching staff and having a healthy Steve Holmes gives our staff lots of options.  All in all it was a good day for the Stealth.”

In other roster moves, Defenseman Nick O’Hara was signed to the Stealth Practice squad.  O’Hara is entering his first NLL season after sustaining a season-ending injury during the 2008 MLL season where he played for the Rochester Rattlers.  He was the 2008 Division I National Defenseman of the Year at Duke University.

The Stealth also announced the release of transition players Will Dalton and Ryan Marshall.  Jim Borell, who played in his first Stealth game last weekend, was moved to the practice squad.

All of these changes will be reflected on the Stealth roster this weekend when they take on the Edmonton Rush March 21.  Tickets for the game are available by calling 877-MY-SJ-TIX or at www.sjstealth.com.
