NLL Insider announced today their 2009 All-Rookie Team, with two of the six spots going to San Jose Stealth players. Forward Rhys Duch was the top vote-getter in the poll and Goaltender Tyler Richards was named the League’s top rookie netminder.
Duch is enjoying one of the best rookie seasons in NLL history. He set a new single-season rookie points record with 89 points (35g, 54a) this season. His point total is seventh in the League and second behind only Colin Doyle’s 111 points on the Stealth. He also grabbed 97 loose balls in 2009, good for second on the Stealth squad. Duch was a three-time winner of the NLL Rookie of the Week award and the March recipient of the Rookie of the Month award.
Richards has been a huge part of the Stealth’s playoff run in the second half of the season. He is the first goaltender to be named All-Rookie since 2002. Richards led the Stealth to a 3-1 record in their final four games, including a three-game win streak to clinch the third seed in the West Division playoffs. In 280 minutes played this season, Richards posted a 10.0 goals against average and a .800 save percentage (2nd in NLL).
Stealth Transition player Paul Rabil was an Honorable Mention selection for the NLL All-Rookie team as well. He finished the season with 34 points (16g, 18a). The complete NLL All-Rookie Team can be seen by clicking here.
The Stealth face the Portland Lumberjax in the West Division Semifinals on May 1. The game will be played at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Ore., and is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm PT. The game can be seen live on the NLL Network at NLL.com.
