Stealth & IBEW Local 191 Team Up for "Save a Life Night"

The Washington Stealth will host its first non-profit event this Friday, January 15 during their game against the Edmonton Rush.  The Stealth have partnered with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 191 and the Puget Sound Blood Center to present “Save a Life Night” and a Bone Marrow Registry Drive prior to the game.

It is estimated that a marrow transplant could benefit more than 10,000 children and adults with life-threatening diseases each year.  Seventy percent of patients in need of a marrow transplant do not have a matched donor in their family.  And because of that, the Stealth will be holding a bone marrow registry drive at 7:00pm at the Comcast Arena.  Registry, which normally costs $100 per person, will be free of charge to everyone in attendance thanks to a grant from the Puget Sound Blood Center.

The marrow registry drive came to the attention of the Stealth after a meeting with Local 191 and Travis Patterson, whose son Turner was the beneficiary of a bone marrow transplant in 2007.  Turner, who is now 12 years old, was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2003.  After going into remission, the cancer returned, this time throughout his entire body.   Turner underwent chemotherapy, full body radiation, spinal taps and brain surgery, but ultimately a bone marrow transplant was his only chance of survival.  In December of 2006, Turner found his match in North Carolina through the National Bone Marrow Registry and received the transplant a few months later.  He is now in remission.

Travis, Turner and IBEW have been holding bone marrow drives all around the State of Washington to help others in need of a transplant, the latest of which will take place at the Comcast Arena on Friday.  The registration process is quick, easy and painless, as only a mouth swab is needed.  By registering as a bone marrow donor, it is not a commitment to donate.  For more information of the National Marrow Donor Program, visit www.marrow.org.

The Stealth take on the Edmonton Rush at 8:00pm at the Comcast Arena.  For tickets, call 877-MY-75-TIX or log on to www.stealthlax.com.
