By Washington Stealth

The Washington Stealth are off to a 2-0 start, cruising to a 15-7 victory over the Edmonton Rush on January 15 at the Comcast Arena.  Matt Roik was dominant in goal, allowing just five goals on 48 shots on his way to the game’s MVP honors.

The Stealth opened the scoring on a Rhys Duch goal just 2:48 into the game thanks to a Lewis Ratcliff assist.  Cam Sedgwick would add another less than two minutes later to give the Stealth a 2-0 advantage.

Edmonton answered with a goal from Ryan Ward to make it 2-1 with ten minutes left to play in the first stanza. Luke Wiles made it 3-1 notching his first goal of the season at the 7:39 mark, but once again the Rush responded, this time with a Corey Small goal.  Wiles would make it 4-2 later in the first.

In the second quarter, the Stealth began to pull away.  They outscored Edmonton 7-3 in the frame, with six different players accounting for seven, second quarter goals.  Lewis Ratcliff scored twice in the period.  The Rush got goals from Ward, Scott Stewart and Dean Hill to keep Edmonton within striking distance at the half with a score of 11-5.

In the second half, Roik took over.  He allowed no goals in the third quarter, making ten saves.  His offense extended the lead to eight with goals from Jeff Zywicki and Duch.  The fourth was much of the same, as Wiles and Tom Johnson tallied goals and Roik kept the Rush out of the net.  Edmonton scored twice in the final three minutes to make the final score 15-7.

Ratcliff paced the offense with two goals and five assists.  Zywicki also scored twice and pitched in four helpers.  Wiles and Duch each recorded a hat trick.

Defensively, Roik had solid play in front of him, as Eric Martin picked up a game-high 15 loose balls.  The Stealth won the loose ball battle by a narrow margin, 76-72.  The Stealth penalty kill unit stopped the Rush power play in each of their four extra man opportunities.

The Stealth are in action again on January 22, when they take on the Buffalo Bandits at the Comcast Arena.  Tickets are on sale now and are available by calling 877-MY-75-TIX or log on to www.stealthlax.com.
