Stealth Acquire Moleski in Trade with Calgary

The defending National Lacrosse League Champion Washington Stealth have announced today the acquisition of Jeff Moleski in a trade with West Division rival Calgary, pending league approval.  The Stealth sent a first round draft pick in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft to the Roughnecks in exchange for the left-handed defenseman, who is considered by many to be one of the best in the league.

“We are thrilled to have acquired one of the top defenders in the NLL today, and feel that this move was a very important step for our franchise,” said Stealth General Manager Doug Locker.  “Jeff is an outstanding lacrosse player, a great leader and a terrific person and he is a perfect fit for our organization.  We could not be more pleased.”

Moleski has played all six seasons of his NLL career with the Calgary Roughnecks, winning the 2009 Championship with the team.  During that 2009 season, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound lefty was considered by many to be one of the favorites for the league’s Defenseman of the Year honors.  In 2010, he was even better statistically, grabbing 97 loose balls and recording 16 points (6g, 10a) in 16 regular season games.  Those totals were second only behind his 2007 campaign, where he posted 108 loose balls and 19 points (9g, 10a).

But statistics only say so much.  Moleski’s impact on the floor as a lock-down defender, and his presence in the locker room are what his teammates appreciate most.  Moleski’s former teammate and long-time NLL star Tracey Kelusky had this to say in a December 2009 article for NLL Insider:

“[Moleski] is the cornerstone of our defense.  He is the guy that is always called upon to defend the big guns on every team. His quiet demeanor on-and-off the field often over shadows the fact that he is a horse on the turf. Not only does he bring it every game but he does so with such determination and passion. I think he has been overlooked ever since he started. I was shocked that last year was his first All-Star appearance. I think he has been one of the best defenders in the league for a couple of years; not just last year!”

Moleski currently resides in Prince George, B.C., with his wife of seven years and their two sons.  He is a distribution mechanic for a gas company in B.C., and is looking forward to taking his lacrosse talents to Washington.

“I’ve heard nothing but great things about the Stealth organization.  I’m extremely happy to be there and look forward to defending the title,” Moleski said after the trade was announced.  He knows how difficult it is to repeat as NLL Champions, having attempted the feat last season in Calgary.  “You can’t get complacent and you have to stay hungry.  Every team brings their ‘A’ game every week against you,” he added.

The Stealth begins their title defense in January 2011, with training camp expected to start in November.  Season tickets for the 2011 season start at just $120 for a ten-game package and can be purchased at www.stealthlax.com or by calling 877-MY-75-TIX.
