The Washington Stealth announced today the signing of Jon Burton, a former midfielder at Army, pending league approval.  Burton is a former All-Patriot League performer and is currently stationed at Fort Lewis in Washington after spending a year overseas in Afghanistan.

Burton played at Army for four seasons, including two under legendary head coach Jack Emmer.  The six-foot, 200-pound Burton was a midfielder and face-off specialist for the Black Knights, earning second team All-Patriot League honors his senior season.

After he finished his playing career at Army, Burton went on to coach lacrosse and women’s basketball at the U.S. Military Preparatory School.  He was then deployed to Afghanistan where he served as a Field Artillery Officer for a year.

After his recent return to the U.S., Burton is now stationed at Fort Lewis for the next two years.  He spent time playing with local club teams in Western Washington and did some coaching for the Seattle Starz. With the Stealth, Burton’s strength and athleticism make him a candidate to be a contributor as a defenseman and in a transition role.

“I played a lot of box lacrosse growing up,” said Burton, a native of Elbridge, NY.  “I know the game, and I’m excited for the opportunity to play at the highest level.”

Burton will join the Stealth in training camp later this fall, adding another potential piece to the Stealth’s National Lacrosse League title defense beginning in January.  “We are excited to have Jon in camp,” said Stealth General Manager Doug Locker.  “He is a talented lacrosse player who has been deployed overseas and has just returned to Fort Lewis.  Chris (Hall) and I were impressed with his athleticism and leadership ability and the positive feedback we received about him.  It's a great opportunity to have someone playing in the NLL while serving in our military.”

Starting in January, the Stealth will look to become the NLL’s first repeat champions since the Toronto Rock completed the feat in 2002 and 2003.  Season tickets for the 2011 season are on sale now by calling 877-MY-75-TIX or at www.stealthlax.com.
