The Washington Stealth announced today the signing of defenseman Chris McElroy, pending league approval.  McElroy spent the last four seasons as the captain of the Edmonton Rush, the team eliminated by the Stealth in last year’s West Division Final.

McElroy is entering his seventh season in the National Lacrosse League.  He played his first season with the now-defunct Anaheim Storm before being traded to the expansion Rush squad prior to the 2006 season.  The left-handed defenseman has appeared in 72 games throughout his career, accumulating 18 goals and 21 assists for 39 points and 319 loose balls.

"Chris is a blue collar team first defender whom we feel could be a great fit our our back door,” said Stealth General Manager Doug Locker after the signing.  “He has great character, is a natural leader an extremely hard worker and is and experienced NLL player.”

When McElroy was named Rush captain in 2007, he enjoyed career highs in goals (8) and points (14) and a year later set a career high with 101 loose balls.  In 2010, the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder appeared in just three games after sustaining a season-ending injury.

McElroy had a great deal of success in the Western Lacrosse Association in British Columbia with the Victoria Shamrocks, where he played under Stealth assistant coach Art Webster.  In 2005, he helped lead the Shamrocks to a Mann Cup title.  In his WLA career, McElroy has played in 69 games, tallying 18 goals and 40 assists for 58 points.

McElroy was also the Community Relations representative for the Rush during his tenure there.  He currently resides in Victoria, B.C.

In order to make room on the roster for McElroy, the Stealth also announced the release of defenseman Travis Gillespie.

The Stealth begins training camp in December, with 36 players fighting to make the 23-man active roster for the 2011 season.  The Stealth will start its NLL title defense on January 8 in Colorado.  The home opener is slated for January 9 against the Calgary Roughnecks.  2011 Season Tickets are on sale now and available by calling 877-MY-75-TIX or at www.stealthlax.com
