The Washington Stealth announced today that its April 9 game against the Minnesota Swarm at the Comcast Arena will be “Pink in the Rink”, as it teams up with the Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® for the second year in a row. The event is part of the National Lacrosse League’s initiative to raise funds to support cancer research and awareness.
“Cancer has touched so many families, and mine is no exception,” said Stealth owner Denise Watkins. “This cause is close to my heart as my mother and one of my sisters are breast cancer survivors. We need to do what we can to help find a cure and improve treatments for this and all forms of cancer. We are thrilled to be able to team up with the Komen Puget Sound Affiliate to raise funds to help fight this deadly disease.”
Each of the Stealth players will wear pink helmets that will be among the items auctioned off during the game. Fans who win the helmets will be invited onto the field to be presented with the helmets by the players following the game. In 2010, “Pink in the Rink” raised over $10,000 for breast cancer research, but the organizations have loftier goals in 2011.
“We are honored to be the beneficiary of the second annual Pink in the Rink. We appreciate Washington Stealth’s commitment to helping us spread the word and raise money to find the cures for breast cancer,” said Komen Puget Sound Executive Director Cheryl Shaw.
About Susan G. Komen for the Cure
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, we have invested more than $1.5 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
