The National Lacrosse league announced today that Washington Stealth Goaltender Tyler Richards has been named Defensive player of the week. Richards, who was appearing in his first game since being sidelined for the previous three games due to an injury, led to Stealth to their first home victory of the season defeating the Colorado Mammoth 11-8.
Richards was a game time decision for the game after being cleared to play one day prior to the game on Sunday. After taking part in the team’s warm-up, Richards was ready to play and Coach Chris Hall did not hesitate to insert him into the starting lineup.
“It was simply a matter of whether he would be cleared to play or not and whether or not he was comfortable enough to play,” said Hall. “He felt good, he was healthy and he is our number one so in he goes and he played great.”
Richards made 40 saves on 48 shots allowing only eight goals against the NLL leading Mammoth squad on Sunday, anchoring the Stealth to their best defensive effort of the season.
“A lot of my saves were coming straight to my chest because the guys are playing great defense, the credit goes to them and I was just happy to be back,” said Richards.
Richards made 13 of his 40 saves in the first quarter and the team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. On top of his 40 save performance Richards also assisted on Rhys Duch’s goal in the fourth quarter which gave the Stealth an 8-7 lead at the time. A lead the Stealth would never relinquish.
The Stealth will get next weekend off to recover from this past weekend’s home-and-home series which was split with the Colorado Mammoth, the home team winning both games.
The Stealth will be back in action on Saturday March 24th against the Edmonton Rush in Edmonton before returning home the following day to face to Minnesota Swarm at Comcast Arena on Sunday March 25th. The game on the 25th will be the Washington Stealth’s “Pink in the Rink” night and is scheduled to being at 4:45pm PST.
Tickets for “Pink in the Rink” at the Comcast Arena at Everett start at just $7 and are available by calling 877-MY-75-TIX or at www.stealthlax.com
