EVERETT, Wash. – Washington Stealth defender Mike Grimes has been named NLL Defensive Player of the Week for Week 16 - the final week of the regular season.

It’s the ninth NLL Player of the Week honor for the Stealth this season.

In Washington’s 17-13 win over Philadelphia last Saturday, the 6-3, 210-pound assistant captain from Peterborough, Ontario logged two points on a goal and an assist, while grabbing seven loose balls and recording one forced turnover.

Grimes’ play helped the Stealth complete a season sweep of the Wings and secure a home-floor date for Saturday’s West Division semifinal playoff game.

In his seventh NLL season, Grimes finished the regular season ranked second among NLL defensemen with eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points.  Among NLL defenders, he finished third with his eight goals and 95 loose balls while also logging 14 forced turnovers.

Other NLL players to be honored in Week 16 include Calgary’s Shawn Evans, (Offensive Player of the Week), Minnesota’s Jordan MacIntosh (Transition Player of the Week) and Buffalo’s Dhane Smith (Rookie of the Week).

Stealth player award recipients this season include Cliff Smith (offensive), Mitch McMichael (transition) and Kyle Buchanan (rookie) who won Player of the Week honors in Week 1.  In Week 2, Smith (offensive) was honored for the second consecutive week.  In Week 6 McMichael (transition) was tapped for the second time this season along with Richards (defensive), while Rhys Duch was named Offensive Player of the Week in Week 9. Richards was tapped for the second time for the defensive honor in Week 10 and Grimes was selected for the defensive award in Week 16.

The NLL Player Awards are determined by a weekly vote of the league's general managers and head coaches.

The 9-7 Stealth open the 2013 playoffs at home on Saturday against the Edmonton Rush in the NLL West Division Semifinal.  Game time at Everett’s Comcast Arena is 4:30 p.m. PDT.  The game is televised live on the CBS Sports Network.
