New Westminster, BC – The Whitby Warriors grabbed game one of the Minto Cup 5 game series final on Thursday (August 22) night beating the New Westminster Salmonbellies 16-6. The Warriors have a 1-0 series lead and are just two wins away from being crowned Minto Cup Champions.
For a large portion of this game it was close even though the final score doesn’t show it. The Salmonbellies actually outshot the Warriors 61-50 in the game and it was tied 2-2 after 20 minutes.
It was about the halfway mark of the second period when the Warriors offence really came alive. Dan Linter got the first of 4 Warriors goals to finish off the period with a 7-4 lead. Linter is tied with Warrior teammate Curtis Knight for the Minto Cup points lead with 18 and both players contributed 5 points each in this game alone.
Reilly O’Connor did one better then both his Warrior teammates Knight and Linter as he had 6 assists in the game. O’Connor was named MVP for the Warriors and led all players in points in this game.
The Warriors continued to find the back of the net in the third period out scoring the Salmonbellies 9-2 in the final frame. The Salmonbellies didn’t go down without a fight and if it weren’t for Warriors goalie Alexis Buque the outcome of the game may have been different. Buque made 55 saves in the game and has been solid all tournament boasting a 5.49 goals against average.
The Salmonbellies did get a strong performance from Connor Robinson who had 2 goals in the game. Robinson was named MVP and now has a total of 10 points in the tournament so far.
The Salmonbellies showed they can play with the Warriors, they just need to find a way to maintain it for a full 60 minutes. The Warriors have yet to lose in this tournament but anything can happen over the course of a 5 game series.
Game two is set for tomorrow night at 8pm in Queen’s Park Arena.
