The New Westminster Salmonbellies have grabbed momentum in the 2013 Minto Cup final after Friday (August 23) night’s 9-7 win over the Whitby Warriors. With the win the Salmonbellies and the Warriors are now tied 1-1 in their best of 5 series final.
The Salmonbellies put together a solid 60 minutes both defensively and offensively as they held the Warriors to their lowest goal total in the tournament. The game remained close from start to finish as the Salmonbellies got themselves back into this series.
In the opening period the Salmonbellies scored first but the Warriors replied with a goal of their own shortly after. The first period was close through the entire 20 minutes as it was tied at two heading into the second frame.
The game opened up offensively in the second period as a total of 9 goals were scored between the two teams. It was back and forth scoring through out the second period but the Salmonbellies held a slight edge taking a 7-6 lead into the final period.
In the third period the Salmonbellies outscored the Warriors 2-1 on route to a 9-7 win and more importantly they tied the series at 1-1. This was the most important victory of the Salmonbellies season so far as they stole some momentum heading into game three.
The two teams struggled to get shots past the goalies on this night, as the Salmonbellies Frank Scigliano and the Warriors Alexis Buque were dominant between the pipes. Scigliano made 45 saves in the win and Alexis Buque made 32 saves and was handed his first loss of the tournament. The two of them also took home well-deserved MVP honours.
