New Westminster, BC – The Whitby Warriors are one win away from raising the Minto Cup as they beat the New Westminster Salmonbellies 13-4 on Saturday (August 24) night.
The early goal for the Salmonbellies seemed to give the crowd some life but the Warriors scored 3 unanswered goals to take momentum into the second period.
The second period was where the Warriors really broke through offensively, out scoring the Salmonbellies 7-2. The intensity picked up in the third period as both teams lost their cool resulting in a number of penalties, fights and ejections. The two teams racked up over 100 penalty minutes each and by the end of the game both benches looked depleted, as multiple players had been tossed from the game.
Michael MacDonald was named MVP for the Warriors as he put together a strong game with 3 goals and an assist. Brendan Ranford of the Salmonbellies took home MVP honours as well scoring one goal for his team. The two MVP’s also managed to stay out of the penalty box for basically the whole game as they only had 2 minutes in penalties between them.
Its now do or die for the Salmonbellies as the Warriors are one win away from claiming the 2013 Minto Cup. The Salmonbellies will look to push the series to a 5th and final game Sunday (August 25) night but they will have to find a way to play a full 60 minutes to do so.
Tomorrow night’s game goes at 8pm at Queen’s Park Arena. Tickets can be purchased at Queen’s Park Arena and for more information visit http://www.bcjunioralacrosse.com/mintocup2013.cfm
