Vancouver, BC – The Vancouver Stealths` Matt Beers and Brett Hickey have been named Western Lacrosse Association All-Stars after their strong summer seasons. Matt Beers was named a 1st team all-star for the Burnaby Lakers while Brett Hickey was named a 2nd team all-star for the Coquitlam Adanacs.

The two players had very different roles for their respective teams as Beers was a force to be reckoned with on the defensive end and Hickey had a breakout season offensively.

Beers had 104 penalty minutes for the Lakers and even though he`s not known for his offense he did put up 4 goals in 20 games during the regular season and playoffs. The Stealth’s Head Coach Chris Hall knows the role Beers plays is an important one and he showed it all year long,

“He’s a marquee player and he’s a big piece of our defense,” Hall said,

“It’s no surprise to see him named a 1st team all-start in the WLA.”

Hickey on the other hand put up big numbers offensively scoring 32 goals and 25 assists in the regular season and posted another 13 points in the playoffs. For some it was a surprise to see Hickey take home an all-star but it didn’t come as a shock to Coach Hall,

“He is determined to succeed and I am really excited about the progress he’s made in such a short period of time. It’s difficult to make the jump from junior “B” to senior “A” and then to the pro’s but he has put in an unbelievable amount of time and effort.”

Both Beers and Hickey`s teams lost out in the first round of the WLA playoffs this year, but they played important roles in getting their teams to the postseason. Beers’ Lakers lost in four straight games to the eventual WLA Champions the Victoria Shamrocks and Hickey`s team lost in 4 straight games to the Langley Thunder.

The two Stealth players will be looking to have similar contributions in the 2014 NLL season as they both will be playing in a building they’re familiar with. Beers has spent the last few years in the WLA competing on an opposing team at the Langley Events Centre, but with the Stealth’s recent move Beers now gets to play closer to home and in a facility he knows very well. Hickey played a year with the Langley Thunder before being traded to the Adanacs, so playing at the LEC should be comfortable for him as well.

The Stealth officially kick off their season in Denver, Colorado on January 4th before returning to the LEC for their home opener against the Minnesota Swarm on January 11.
