VANCOUVER, BC (Friday, September 13, 2013) – The Vancouver Stealth head into the 2013 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft with a first round pick for the first time since 2008. The Stealth hold the 8th overall pick at this year’s NLL Entry Draft, which is set for Monday, September 16th at 4pm PT at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre (TRAC) in Oakville, Ontario.
In 2008 the Stealth had two first round picks and they selected Paul Rabil and Rhys Duch, 2nd and 3rd overall respectively. The two players have been putting up impressive stats since joining the league as they’ve both become impact players in just 5 seasons in the NLL. Rabil was traded to the Edmonton Rush and subsequently to the Philadelphia Wings in 2012 whereas Duch has played his entire career with the Stealth. In 78 regular season games Duch has racked up 440 points, which is good enough for 2nd most in franchise history.
The Stealth would like to find similar success with this year’s first round pick as Head Coach Chris Hall knows how important those picks can be,
“We’ve been really conscientious about preserving that first round pick this year because we haven’t had one for a while. Although there are many ways to build a team, through the draft or free agency and over the past few years we’ve felt we didn’t need a first round pick because our roster was good and young.”
In the 2012 NLL Entry Draft the Stealth selected mostly defensemen but this time around they may consider adding some more depth upfront,
“We’ll be looking for some offensive players,” said Coach Hall.
“But it’s the old story when your pick comes along, sometimes you have to take the most outstanding player or athlete who you know is going to help your team, it’s hard to pass on them.”
In conjunction with the draft, there will be a Combine for prospects and free agents looking to showcase their skills and boost their chances of getting selected. The two-day event will be held at the TRAC starting September 14th at 3pm PT where players take part in practice drills and go through an interview process with NLL General Managers and Coaches.
The Combine really showcases players in a different light and provides some clarity for management before they make their final decisions,
“You really get that close up comparison, all the top players are playing against each other or with one another,” said Coach Hall.
“It gives you a good indication what there like skill wise relative to each other, that’s the advantage of the Combine every year.”
The Stealth currently have 7 more picks lined up after their 8th overall pick as they will select, 17th, 22nd , 26th , 36th, 41st, 45th and 54th. The complete 2013 NLL Entry Draft order can be seen at www.nll.com
