(Vancouver, BC – Tuesday, December 17, 2013) – The Vancouver Stealth have officially named runners Nick Weiss (Port Hope, ON), Josh Hawkins (Amherst, MA), Chris Wardle (Victoria, BC), and goaltender Neil Tyacke (New Westminster, BC) to their 4 man practice roster. With these four signed to the practice roster the Stealth add more depth in goal and three young players that were drafted in this year’s NLL Entry Draft.
Weiss (17th overall) came into camp after finishing off his final year of junior lacrosse as a member of the Peterborough Junior A Lakers. In his four year junior career, he collected 108 points (42 goals, 66 assists).
Hawkins (41st overall) cracking the Stealth’s practice roster may come as a surprise to some as he came into camp with no previous experience in box lacrosse. Hawkins was however able to impress the coaching staff with his athletic abilities, catching the coaches attention from day one of camp. In four years of field lacrosse at Loyola College (MD), Hawkins tallied 35 points (26 goals, 9 assists) to go along with 172 groundballs and 34 caused turnovers, as a short stick defensive midfielder.
Wardle (54th overall) much like Weiss is coming off a solid junior career playing all three seasons with the Victoria Junior A Shamrocks. In his final season as a junior, Wardle scored 90 points (46 goals, 44 assists), finishing off his three year junior career with 162 points (78 goals, 84 assists).
With the addition of Weiss, Hawkins and Wardle the Stealth were able to keep 5 of their 9 draft picks from the 2013 NLL Entry draft. Only Cody Bremner (8th overall) and Tyler Digby (20th overall) were named to the Stealth’s active roster.
For Tyacke, he’s coming off a strong summer in net, competing in all 18 games for the New Westminster Salmonbellies of the Western Lacrosse Association. He had a record of 7 wins, 9 losses and 1 tie to go along with a 9.31 goals against average. Tyacke also began last season on the practice roster for the Stealth and appeared in one game.
All four players are expected to be in town for the final training camp sessions which continue this weekend on December 21st at 10am-12pm, and 7pm-9pm and on December 22nd from 10am-12pm. The final day of training camp will take place on December 28th at 10am-12pm, and 7pm-9pm following the Holiday break.
The regular season for the Stealth will start shortly after the last day of training camp as the 2014 season begins on January 4th against the Colorado Mammoth. The Stealth then host their home opener on January 11th against the Minnesota Swarm.
